Dance with Us!
Artistic Movements Initiative currently offers open classes for dancers age 14 and up in Ballet, Pointe, and Modern. The classes are geared towards Intermediate level dancers; some dance experience is recommended. We are working to expand our class offerings, so stay tuned for updates! Our class descriptions are below, along with our calendar showing upcoming classes and links to sign up.

We currently hold our classes at Music in Motion, 629 N. Lynnhaven Road in Virginia Beach, VA.

Intermediate Ballet
This 90-minute ballet class includes 45-50 minutes of barre work, including typical barre elements from plies to grand battements. Center work includes adagio, turn combinations, waltzes, and multiple jump combinations including petit allegro and grand allegro. Some ballet experience is required.
Ballet attire or comfortable workout wear are acceptable; as long as you are comfortable moving in it, it works for us! Ballet slippers are recommended; socks are acceptable as well.

Beginner/Intermediate Pointe
This 60-minute pointe class includes 30-35 minutes of barre work, including releves, pas de bourrees, echappes, passes, fondus, and more. Center work includes those same elements along with turns, bourrees, and piques. It is highly encouraged to attend the ballet class prior to pointe class.
The recommended attire is the same as for the ballet class. Dancers are also welcome to take this class in ballet slippers (or socks) to strengthen their technique and to prepare for pointe.

Intermediate Modern
These 90-minute modern classes go through a class structure of warm-ups, center phrases, floor work and across the floor movement. These classes will have eclectic influences from modern pioneers mixed with post-modern practices of release technique and head-tail connection. Movements will include leg swing, X work, prancing, triplets, shoulder rolls, inversions, contractions, fall and recovery, tension and release and more. Some dance experience is required.
Comfortable workout wear is acceptable for class attire. Please consider having added layers such as pants, sweaters and/or shirts that cover the shoulders.
